Note the smoke coming from the condenser can. A Vickers machine gun is water cooled and can fire for long periods without the need of extra barrels, etc. When such long firing is done, the water in the cooling jacket (around the barrel) starts to boil. The vapour caused by the boiling is extracted via a hose to a can. The water condenses in the can, and can be re-used later if necessary.

As the guns are firing, more ammunition is brought up from the carriers by the driver. He is wearing a gascape over his web equipment. This type of garment was originally worn as a protection against spray gasses, but later in the war it made an excellent raincape...
Against regulations of course...

The order to cease fire is given. Both guns stop firing immediately. The infantry attack is about to start now. The gunners remain on their positions until the breakthrough is a success and consolidated.

Time for a well-earned break.
